HP Designjet 130 IP Address

One of the most annoying things I have to deal with is printers' IP addresses. This is especially difficult if the printer doesn't have a screen. Take the HP Designjet 130. It actually has a screen, but cannot represent digits. Not only this, but on top of this, it only has 3 buttons, none of which mention "setup". So, when the computer cannot send jobs to the printer how do you find out what is wrong? Well:
  1. load up a browser window and browse to the last known IP address of the printer...
    1. no response.
  2. ping the IP address which you think it has......
    1. no response.
  3. hold in the power button (while it's switched on) and press the paper feed button 4 times!!!!!!!
    1. it should print some (not sure how many) pages of information. 1st one has IP address.

I do remember wanting to write this down about 7 months ago but I can't find it anywhere. Anyway, here it is.

P.S.
HP, could you please make the instruction number 3 in the list above more self-explanatory. i.e. have a button or just hold in the power button for setup printouts. 4 button presses is over the top.

HP Designjet 500 error 02:10 ribbon problems- trailing cable

I went to use the HP Designjet 500 and upon switching it on I noticed the print carriage stopping abruptly half way along the bed. Looking inside I noticed the ribbon which connects to the carriage was crumpled and had dried ink all over it. Thought this was causing the problem because it was unable to slide along with the carriage so I cleaned it.

After this it's had a few problems loading the paper, and also whilst printing. Just noticed this "System Error 02:10".

Found a few forums on the subject referring to the carriage and print heads. Replaced yellow printhead adn while it was performing an alignment it came up with:
System Error:  79:04

Found this (right at the bottom) one saying it was the connection with the ribbon cable. Looks like it's not getting the right 2.5V signal from the carriage. Needs reseating. Otherwise replace the cable.

The trouble is: How to get into the printer to reseat the cable? Looks like a bit of work.

Found a quick little tutorial on how to get the main cover off. Simply remove the three screws (hex) on the back main part. I unclipped the lift up cover, and you need to unclip the main cover by lifting it up.

Not sure how to remove the side panels.

I reseated the cables on the print carriage but after doing about 2 inches of print on a 36" roll it came up with this error again.

Found a service manual for the HP Designjet 500.
The error is found in section 2-8, carriage failure. It says to replace the Carriage Assembly, but my suspisions point to specifically the "Trailing Cable" as this was quite bent, possibly shorting when the carriage is moving.
To replace the "Trailing Cable" go to section 8-40

Looks like the trailing cable is about £15 so pretty cheap to try out.

If this doesn't work perhaps a carriage assembly. About £120 refurbished, or £350 new

Note ...................
7th Feb 2013
So, it's 3 months on and I finally got the chance to install a new "Trailing Cable". Nothing to note about changing the cable over, the manual is quite self explanatory. The only thing I found was that the torx screws were not size T20, were actually a size or two smaller.

After installation it worked perfectly!

Fixed.

Adobe InDesign - The Adobe Print Engine has failed - AuthDialog.nib

Having a slight problem with InDesign. Just tried printing a file from InDesign to an Epson Stylus Pro 7600 and came up with this error:

Printing Error. The Adobe Print Enine has failed to output your data due to an unknown problem

Looking in the log files I found this entry:

19/03/2012 12:32:57 Adobe InDesign CS5[421] -[AuthWindowController loadWindow]: failed to load window nib file '/Library/Application Support/Adobe/APE/3.1/adbeapecore.framework/Versions/A/Resources/AdobeSWFL.bundle/Contents/Resources/AuthDialog.nib'.

Couldn't find anything on it on the internet.

I did a bit of testing. Tried:

  • printing a new document - printed
  • printed a new document with the same images in - printed
  • printed a new document with the same text (was foreign text) - error
Thus I have concluded that it is to do with the unusual text in the document. It was a piece of text translated using Google Translate and pasted, using the Arial font.

The funny thing was that I was unable to export it as a pdf file from that machine, but was able to export it using another machine? As it's just a one off print I thought I'd leave it there.

Anyway, printed it from the pdf file, created on another machine, through Preview. Worked!

  1. To make a new custom paper size click the "+"
  2. If you're printing on the A1+ roll paper make sure the width is 61.55 cm
  3. Name it something appropriate
  4. Click OK once the Paper Size is right

  1. Switch it on
  2. Check it is on either "Roll with Autocut" or "Sheet" depending upon what you are printing on
  3. Release the handle and fee paper in
  4. Make sure it is straight and then close the handle

Now, if it starts printing something and you haven't sent anything to print it is probably someone else's print, in which case hold the Pause button for 3 seconds that should cancel the job. Also check the print queue by clicking on the print shortcut at the bottom of the screen.

When you're sure everything is good, on the computer - press PRINT
