OS X installing Profiles .mobileconfig files through ARD command line

I've not quite got OS X server running pushing changes to macs yet, so in the mean time I have to change a profile through the web service, download it and install it on the machines I want to update.

I found this article which helped doing it through command line:

/usr/bin/profiles -I -F "/Library/MyOrganization/Company Wi-Fi.mobileconfig"

I first copied the file to "Users/Shared" then ran this script. To improve it, I could make a pkg file which ran a script to install the file. That is the next step

OS X Mavericks - No disk space on startup disk - files that can be deleted

After re-imaging a new Macbook Pro 13", I discovered that it only had a 120GB Hard Drive. The Disk Image I use takes up all of this space, so files have to be deleted. The applications that take the most disk space are:

Soundtrack Pro Loops
DVD Studio Pro Content
Motion Content
LiveType Content
Logic Content

so, after imaging these machines type this in to remove these things:

rm -R /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Library/Audio/Apple\ Loops/Apple/Apple\ Loops\ for\ Soundtrack\ Pro/
rm -R /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Library/Application\ Support/Final\ Cut\ Studio/DVD\ Studio\ Pro/

rm -R /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Library/Application\ Support/LiveType/
rm -R /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Library/Application\ Support/Logic/

Should make about 57.05GB

As the MacBook Pro is for a manager, these applications arent' needed.

iMac 24 inch 7,1 SOS beeps

An iMac is beeping when switched on. Beeps are 3 short, 3 long, 3 short:

beep, beep, beep, beeeeeeep, beeeeeeep, beeeeeeep, beep, beep, beep

Basically SOS

So far I've tried:

1. swapping RAM with working computer
2. swapping power cable with working computer
3. holding down D and other keys

Looks like its a EFI ROM corruption. Could possibly be the battery. Will try replacing the Battery first. Here's a tutorial on it

installing MFD canon IR 5840 and 4080 printers using only one queue

So we have a print management system, and Canon Multi Function devices installed everywhere. When we send a print, it goes to only one queue, and will print on whatever MFD you log on to. TRouble is there are multiple models, i.e.

Canon IR C4080
Canon iR C4580
Canon 5840

When we send a print to the 4080 using the 4080 PCL drivers from a Mac, it prints fine. If we send them to the 5840 it prints gobble-de-goop.

So now I'm testing the 5840 drivers on both to see what happens. I'm not sure which to try, the PS drivers or the UFR II (whatever that means) drivers.

Apple Keyboard and Windows 7 @ and " characters swapped over

Since putting bootcamp on Apple Macs we've always had a problem where the keys on the Keyboard in windows were never 'quite' right. Almost, but not. The most annoying one was the old @ key being swapped with " key.

Even after installing bootcamp drivers this problem persisted. It did turn quite interesting though:
I went into keyboard language setup and added "United Kingdom (Apple)", and deleted the bog standard "United Kingdom". After this, in some dialogue boxes the keyboard was behaving correctly (" and @ not swapped) and in everything else the @ and " keys were swapped around!

After trauling through google search results, I searched for Keyboard Regedit as I was sure something could be done here. After finding this article about changing keyboard regions I did the following steps:

1. Opened Regedit
2. went to  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout\Preload
3. Took note of what was here
1. there were two entries:
1. 1.   a0000809
2. 1.  00000809
4. I next went to  HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Preload
5. Took a note what was here
1. there was only one entry
1. 1.  00000809
6. I thus deduced that the Apple keyboard was a0000809 and the normal (incorrect) keyboard was 00000809
7. I deleted the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Keyboard Layout\Preload\00000809 so there was only one entry here
8. I edited the HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Keyboard Layout\Preload entry so it read:
1. 1.  a0000809
9. I rebooted and it all worked!!!!!

So, the problem was that Windows was using the Normal UK language layout for the keyboard, and when I added the Apple UK language layout it only used it at times because there was two entries for my login. But when the computer initially loads up the Apple version wasn't there. Now time for a cuppa.

DeployStudio rc20 not showing new Disk Image Masters

I've just taken a Master image using DeployStudio but the image doesn't appear in the list of images, nor in the /Masters/HFS/ directory on the server. Of course this has happened before so I'm merely writing this down as reference.

The reason is because it uses a directory called /Masters/.workInProgress/ to store disk images whilst they're being made. When they are complete (which is after post processing like ASR scan and gzip) they get moved into the appropriate folder, in this case /Masters/HFS/. I think something happened and it never got moved. In the terminal I simply typed:

admin$ mv /Masters/.workInProgress/OSX-10_6_6-SMALL-2012-06-27.i386.hfs.dmg ../HFS/


But replace OSX-10_6_6-SMALL-2012-06-27.i386.hfs.dmg with the name of your disk image. Tab completion is the easiest way.

MacBook Pro Trackpad "not working properly" in Windows XP

Whenever I reimage MacBook Pro's with Windows XP I always have the same problem with the trackpad.

When you boot up, the trackpad does not function. Logging in and going to device manager you see that there is an exclamation mark over the trackpad. It simply says something like:

This device is not working properly. Error 16

Uninstalling, reinstalling, disabling, enabling does not fix it.

I reinstalled Bootcamp 3.0 drivers which did not help.

I found this forum quite interesting. Seems to mention about uninstalling some Windows Apple things in "Add/Remove Programs". But I didn't try this.

I next updated to Bootcamp 3.1 drivers and rebooted. Worked a treat!

Update - 24/09/2012

Well, just reimaged a macbook pro and the same problem occurred. Installed Bootcamp 3.1 and it didn't work!

Finally had a look at the forum mentioned above and the solution they gave worked. More specifically:

1. go to Device Manager and update the driver for the trackpad.
2. click "No, not this time" for internet update.
3. Click, "install from a list or specific location".
4. click, "Don't search, I will choose a driver to install"
5. Choose the generic driver.
6. Click finish

The trackpad starts to work but no multitouch facilities. This is the point you install/reinstall bootcamp 3 and 3.1.

After this it works a treat.

Mac OS X 10.6.6 Active Directory Login issues

A while after updating all the Apple Suites to 10.6.6 I started getting a few Apple Macs which would not let anybody log in. I had a look at the system log and found this:

This is what happened after I woke the machine up and then tried to log in as a user called "_mac_bind". It happens with any Active Directory user.

After trying all the standard things:

1. reset PR-RAM
2. /sbin/fsck -yf
3. unbind and bind again

I finally resorted to re-imaging, which actually fixed the problem, although I am not sure why.

I came back to the problem after finding it happen quite a few times and tried binding it to Active Directory with a different name (although I had my doubts). This fixed the problem.

I conclude to say that there must have been a problem on the server side. Perhaps the mac had been placed in the wrong list. My next thing to try would be to delete any instance of it on the servers and try binding it under it's old name.

After this, I would either assume someone had done something to the instance on the server, or the server had not liked the machine at one point and disallowed it.

Well, I've come back to this some time later. It appears one of the Staff iMacs is now exhibiting the same behavour, but changing its Active Directory bound name does not fix it this time. So, before I re-image hopefully the Network Administrator can have a look. Here's the log for the one exhibiting this behavour:

The only differences between these two machines are the fact that they are on different VLANs. The mac with the problem is on a special MAC VLAN, and the other is not.

Coincidentaly, I've only seen the problem on Mac's on this specific VLAN? Might be a coincidence as half of them are on the VLAN, soon to be all.

I shall update this. If anybody has any ideas please reply.

So, still no luck but lots more logs. Not sure if I'm going to post them all as it seems like a lot of data. Anyway, I ran out of time and had to re-image. It's working now. I shall update this when I find another machine with the same issues.
