Scanning with the Nikon CoolScan 8000 and Nikon Scan 4

To scan in your negs/slides in a high quality you are best off using the Nikon Coolscan 8000.

Log in and load Nikon Scan 4 located in - Applications > Nikon Software > Nikon Scan 4

1.  When Nikon Scan is fully loaded, switch on the Nikon Coolscan 8000, making sure the cover is up (closed)
2. When you get a message on screen that the cover is up, push the cover down. 
3. Load your film/slides into the holder
4. Load the holder into the scanner. Look for the arrow on the holder to orient it the correct way. Be gentle and eventually it will take the film in.

5. You may need to wait, but eventually a pull out button will appear on screen. Click this to see the number of slides.
6. Click on a slide (or hold down shift to select more) and press preview. This will do a 'quick' scan of the slides.
7. Clicking on one of these slides now gives you a preview
8. Click a slide (or multiple) and click "Scan"

If you've selected multiple slides, another dialogue box appears. Click on “Browse” and navigate to one of the Local Hard Drives - i.e. Scratch Disk or OS X > Users > Shared

NOTE: You cannot save to you Home Drive, you need to save to the Machine.

If you've only scanned in one slide, when it has finished it will load this image up. You need to save this.

Click - File > Save. Navigate to one of the Local Hard Drives - i.e. Scratch Disk or OS X > Users > Shared

Scanning on the Canon LiDE 60 Scanner on OS X 10.6

Go to Applications > Image Capture

1. Click on the scanner in the top left
2. Click "Show Details"

3. Check that the details are correct (300 dpi is good)
4. Click "Scan"

Installing Canon LiDE 60 scanner on OS X 10.6.6

I recently updated one of the PC's to an iMac, yay, but forgot to think about the scanner attached. It was a Canon LiDE 60 scanner. The mac had OS X 10.6.6. Tried "Image Capture" at the off chance it'd pick it up straight away and alas it did not.

I did a quick search on the internet and found this bit of info. It says you have to install two things, a driver and something else (didn't pay too much attention). A lot of people agreed with it.

I went to Canons website, found the downloads section for the scanner here and downloaded all the OS X stuff. I was a little annoyed that it does not have a description of any of the downloads. I would like to know what they actually are.

After I downloaded it I started off trying the driver called "deldrvosx1510efg.dmg". Looked good to begin with but then asked if I was sure I wanted to uninstall the Canon LiDE 60 scanner! After saying yes (didn't think it would do any harm) it crashed.

I next tried the "lide60osx11131en.dmg" which contained the "ScanGear CS 11.1 Eng_Installer.pkg" file. It was quick and painless and wanted a reboot. After the reboot I loaded up Image Capture and it worked a treat!

So, to conclude, you basically just need to install the ScanGear CS pkg file.

Done.

Microtek ScanMaker 8700, ScanWizard Pro and OS X 10.6

After upgrading all the machines to 10.6.6, ScanWizard Pro 7.20 kept coming up with an "error -1" when the application was loaded up, and also an "error -30000" when we tried to initiate a scan. It obviously wasn't made for 10.6.

I updated to ScanWizard 7.62, but this couldn't find the ScanMaker 8700. It actually appeared in the scanner probe but wouldn't let you click on it. Quite frustrating!

So, I did a quick search for the problem and found this article by Microtek. They've got a work-around:

1. Download and install ScanWizard 5
2. Download and install the ScanMaker 8700 specific driver

It has to be done in this order for some reason. I also removed ScanWizard Pro 7 so there wouldn't be any confusion.
