Well, you wouldn't believe it but whilst looking in the headphone socket with a screwdriver I managed to push it right though and now none of the top buttons work (power, mute and volume). Doh! So I'm going to replace the earpeice but I need to power down the device.
The only place you can do this is by installing a cyndia program. I found BossPrefs but doesn't work on IOS 4. It was replaced with SBSettings. Just swipe your finger across the top of the screen and you get more options!! Amazing!
A catalogue of 'stuff' which somehow will help me through life by helping me remember problems I've solved, how I solved them and thoughts which will be otherwise forgotten (some of which might be of use later on).

Netboot services "greyed out"
Services and/or Sharing greyed out:
The Netboot or other service list items in Server Admin Computers & Services column may be dimmed ("grayed out"). Dimmed items cannot be administered in Server Admin.
Solution
1. On the affected server, quit Server Admin.
2. Delete the /var/servermgrd/ directory.
3. In Terminal, execute this command:
sudo launchctl stop com.apple.servermgrd
4. Restart Server Admin.
Also, if Netboot still isn't working:
sudo killall mountd
sudo rm /var/db/mountdtab
sudo mountd
